When choosing a lamp for a bath or sauna, it should be understood that for a steam room this is not only a source of lighting, but also a way to create a relaxing atmosphere that is typical for this room. Therefore, when buying conventional or LED lamps for a sauna or bath, you need to pay attention not only to their technical characteristics, but also to their appearance, but also to the brightness of the light stream. Remember that too bright light will not allow you to relax normally, and too dark can cause trouble. Ideally, the device should give a warm light with a slight yellow tint.

Today we will talk about LED and not only lamps for baths and saunas, about the features of the placement, you will also learn how to make a stylish lamp with your own hands and see photos of lighting models for baths.

Basic safety requirements

To ensure your safety while taking a sauna and bath, as well as to protect others, the lamps in the bath and sauna must be reliably protected from moisture, for this they are equipped with shades and are made of stainless material. Of course, in terms of aesthetics, it will not look very nice, but you will be calm in terms of safety. As a decor, you can use wooden grilles for lamps. The main characteristics that any lighting device, both LED and conventional, used in a bath or sauna should have, are:

  • high quality of the product;
  • resistance to high temperatures over 100-120 degrees;
  • resistance to high humidity.

Lighting devices are installed in baths and saunas, as a rule, under the ceiling, so remember that the higher the temperature they can withstand, the better.

Classification of lamps for saunas

Suitable for baths and saunas what types of lamps:

  • appliances equipped with incandescent lamps;
  • LED lights;
  • fiber optic lighting systems.

Now let's look at each of these types in more detail.

Features of lighting baths and saunas with devices with incandescent lamps

Remember that in such lamps the body must be able to withstand high temperature loads and high levels of humidity. To protect the lamp itself from moisture, you can use seals, with which you need to seal the space between the ceiling and the body of the device. When choosing a lighting device for a bath or sauna that runs on an incandescent lamp, remember that it must have a safety class of at least IP56.

For baths and saunas, incandescent lamps of no more than 60 W should be used, and lamps with higher power get very hot and pose a danger. Please note that in the sauna and bath, the wooden walls are already well heated from the stove, and a lamp that is too hot can cause a fire.

LED lamps for lighting devices in the bath and sauna

Unlike conventional lamps, LED lamps have the following advantages:

  • reliability;
  • security;
  • also LED lamps are more economical;
  • moisture resistant.

Some LED lamps will be safe even if water gets in. However, LED lights also have a disadvantage- it's too bright light. But if you install LED devices correctly and choose them correctly, there will be nothing wrong with such brightness.

Some models of LED lighting fixtures can change the brightness of the light stream and even its shade and are equipped with a special control panel. This will make taking a sauna or bath even more memorable. In addition, you can set the starry sky effect and other color effects.

Another disadvantage of LED lamps is the rather high cost.

Description of fiber optic lighting systems for saunas and baths

Fiber Optic Lighting Systems completely safe regardless of the application environment. Their peculiarity lies in the fact that the optical fiber is capable of conducting only waves of light, and not electrics. Thanks to these characteristics, they can be installed anywhere, for example, at the bottom of the pool in the sauna, and thus create an unusual light effect while bathing.

The key characteristics of fiber optic systems are:

  • the ability to withstand temperatures up to 200 degrees;
  • unsharp light, which allows you to relax as much as possible;
  • profitability;
  • durability;
  • ease of installation.

If you choose between classic lighting, LED and fiber optic, then the last option will be the most ideal, the first - the most economical.

How to place the lamps in the bath

After you have decided on the type of lighting device, you need to install it. In each of the rooms of the sauna or bath installation must be done differently. Let's find out exactly how.

How to install lighting in the steam room

The most important rule when installing lighting in a sauna steam room is not to put the lighting device in the wrong place, that is, next to the stove, regardless of heat resistance and ability to withstand high temperatures.

You can put lamps in other places, it all depends on your imagination. The most optimal option is lamps above the ceiling, but they should be installed so that none of those sitting on the shelves of the bath and sauna hit their heads against them.

Sometimes lamps are placed in the corner, since they are rarely used, this place is also suitable. You can also place a horizontal device at the junction of the ceiling and wall. You can also make a corner decorative screen and stick the LED strip on a non-combustible base.

Devices equipped with a ceramic base are suitable for the Finnish sauna, while others can quickly fail. But for a classic Russian bath, you can take any device made of heat-resistant material, while the base should be sufficient for use in high humidity, it is best when it is made of the following materials:

  • stainless steel;
  • aluminum;
  • heat resistant plastic.

Installation of lamps in the sink

This part of the sauna and bath is not as hot as in the steam room, but there is a fairly high level of humidity, which, in combination with electrical appliances, can be dangerous. Therefore, choose appliances of the same protection class as for the bathroom. Wash room divided into three zones on the use of luminaires of different protection classes:

  • the first zone is the immediate proximity to the water source, so water can enter the device in unlimited quantities. Devices must have a power of 12 V and a protection class of at least the fifth;
  • the second zone - 60 cm from the water source, the protection class of the device - from 4 and above;
  • the third zone is relatively dry. Required class - 1 and above.

Some saunas and baths are equipped with a room such as a relaxation room. Sometimes the level of humidity rises here, so the lighting fixtures that you put here must have at least a minimum moisture protection class.

Now let's find out what should the light be in one or another room of the bath or sauna:

  • in the steam room, the light should be diffused; LEDs and diffused light LED strips are suitable for this. The devices themselves should be placed on the ceiling, on the backs and lower shelves;
  • in the washing room, the light should be quite pronounced, but not sharp;
  • in the rest room, it is desirable to install devices with different light intensities and directions and place them according to the zoning principle.

How to make a lamp for a bath with your own hands

Probably, everyone wants every thing in the interior of a sauna or bath to be unique and exclusive. Of course, you can find something original and unique on sale, but such a pleasure will be very expensive.

Therefore, if you dream of an exclusive model of a bath lamp, but are not ready to pay a lot of money for it, make it yourself.

For work you will need the following materials:

  • wood left over from the interior decoration of the bath;
  • glass;
  • plywood;
  • PET film with a temperature range of at least 120 degrees;
  • LEDs;
  • electrical insulating material Getinaks;
  • aluminum tape;
  • mounting adhesive;
  • Super glue.

Now let's get to work:

If it will be difficult to make a lighting fixture for a sauna or bath on your own, then choose brand name products that have proven themselves positively in the market. For example, Tylo and Harvia, manufacturers of heat-resistant lamps from Finland, guarantee excellent quality. They are not cheap, but this will be the best solution for the steam room.

But for other bath rooms, you can choose lamps that are more modest in terms of cost and characteristics. There are many companies that offer good products at reasonable prices, many of them are domestic manufacturers. But when choosing, focus primarily not on the brand, but on the technical characteristics of the product. So you can choose the best lighting fixtures for your sauna.

Lamps in the bath and sauna

The range of lighting devices on the modern market is huge and constantly expanding. But not all lamps are suitable for certain conditions and premises.

The article will discuss how to choose the most durable and suitable devices for lighting a steam room in a bath.

Requirements

Lighting devices are primarily used for their intended purpose - to add light to the room. But in the case of a steam room, they should be selected according to a number of criteria.

First of all, it is an aesthetic component. Lighting in the bath should be conducive to relaxation, not irritate the eyes, cause pleasant and comfortable feelings. The second important point is safety, since in steam rooms there are rather difficult operating conditions, the lamps must withstand them.

What should be taken into account?

There are few factors to consider when choosing fixtures:

  • high humidity. In some steam rooms, the moisture level is over 90%. Not every device can cope with such an indicator.
  • Sharp temperature fluctuations. In many cases, the bath is located on the street and is a separate building. Therefore, if you heat it in winter, then the temperature difference can be from -40 degrees and below to +120 and above.
  • Prolonged exposure to hot air. The bath is heated to high temperatures and can be in this state for hours.

The lamps have a number of technical characteristics, according to which it will be easier to choose them for use in the steam room.

The main characteristic for steam rooms is the degree of protection IP. It is marked with two numbers.

The first digit shows how the luminaire is protected from various kinds of particles and mechanical influences. The number 5 indicates that the protection from external contacts and dust is complete. The second number indicates the resistance to moisture. Moisture-proof lamps from small splashes spreading from any direction are indicated by the number 4.

According to the level of exposure to temperature it is worth stopping the choice on devices that can withstand temperatures from 130 degrees. Consider the installation location of the lamp. The closer it is to the ceiling, the more heat it must withstand.

And you also need to provide sufficient lighting. It will depend on the number of devices, and on their location, and on power. Recommended wattage may vary for different types of lamps.

Incandescent lamps should not be installed if their power is more than 60 watts. During operation, they get very hot and can cause a fire.

Another important selection criterion is the color of the lighting. The most favorable will be the usual yellow light. It is comfortable for the eyes, creates an atmosphere of comfort and peace. White color is colder, more disturbing. You can choose a color backlight, but you should not use it as the main. Bright colors can be annoying and distracting when relaxing in the bath.

There are varieties of lamps in which you can adjust the direction of light. It is convenient in steam rooms, unexpectedly and effectively. You can adjust the lighting according to specific conditions.

And also a practical solution would be to install a controlled lighting system, when some of the devices can be turned off and on as needed.

When choosing the type of lighting, you need to think about how the whole system will look like.

To do this, do not forget to consider the following parameters:

  • room dimensions;
  • is it possible to provide electrical wiring;
  • the maximum number of lamps for each fixture;
  • functions of the room - a separate steam room, combined with a shower room, a wet or dry steam room; these conditions will affect the degree of humidity;
  • angles of the luminous flux of devices.

As a result of studying all of the above, it may seem that the number of factors is too large, and is it not easier to choose the lamp you like in the store. But compliance with these conditions will allow you to create a comfortable, beautiful, unusual and safe interior that will last you a long time.

How to arrange?

First of all, it must be remembered that no matter how the lamp is protected from high temperatures, it cannot be placed directly near the stove. This is an additional risk for the safety of the premises and your health.

Installing lighting fixtures in a steam room requires a special approach.

The layout of their placement should take into account important features:

  • It is better not to install a clearly directed light, especially towards the area where the vacationers will sit. This will cause great discomfort. Scattered rays will soften the situation and will not irritate the eyesight.
  • Ceiling lights will be exposed to the most heat, so be prepared to change them quite often, even if they are high-quality heat-resistant products.

  • All appliances must be equipped with protective screens or grilles. This will protect others in the event of flying fragments.
  • The ceramic base of the luminaire is less susceptible to heat, and there is less chance of burns if accidentally touched.
  • Sufficient lighting should be considered in high-traffic areas. In the case of a steam room, this is the entrance, the shelves on which the vacationers sit, stones or a stove where heating takes place.
  • Additional lighting of important functional areas (shelves, doors, heater).

There are various options for installing fixtures. If you decide to mount them above shelves, think about the height at which they will be installed so that users do not touch them with their bodies or touch their heads.

The best option for installation would be an angle. It is unlikely that someone will sit there, so the device will not interfere. If, according to the design of the bath, you need to place the lighting as close to the ceiling as possible, install the devices horizontally on the walls at the point of their connection with it.

In Finnish baths, emphasis should be placed on high temperatures. A Russian bath involves high humidity. Therefore, the materials of the body and lamp for both types will be different.

Types and features

It is necessary to consider what types of lamps are in order to choose the option that suits you:

  • Halogen lamps. This type is becoming increasingly popular due to its many advantages. Lamps have their own reflectors. The power is low (about 30 W), but the products can withstand high temperatures. This is also due to their own design. The temperature inside the lamp reaches 400 degrees. The structure is thought out in such a way as to protect the lamp as much as possible from moisture penetration and other influences. Light turns out natural, comfortable for the person. Safety of use is also explained by the standard voltage required for operation. There are multi-colored species, but they are not widely represented on the market.
  • Fluorescent lamps quite convenient to use. It is worth choosing products without an electromagnetic choke. A significant advantage of such lamps is the ability to control the brightness of the light. This adds convenience to the application, and expands the possibilities for design. There are energy-saving varieties for economical consumption. It is important to take into account the peculiarity of fluorescent lighting - it does not tolerate frost. And if your bathhouse is located outside in a region with a cold winter, it is better to refuse to use them.

  • fiber optic devices very durable, withstand the most stringent requirements, but it is necessary to strictly follow the recommendations for their installation for fire safety. Devices in the form of a bundle can operate at temperatures up to 200 degrees. The scattered flow of light and placement everywhere give great scope for design imagination.
  • LED lights- a real fetish for designers. But in the case of a steam room, they have a somewhat limited application. LEDs under normal conditions serve many times longer than conventional lamps, but at high temperatures they quickly fail. If you still decide to install them in the steam room, place them close to the floor (under or behind the shelves). Lighting can be quite bright and have any color. The LED strip must be glued to non-flammable and environmentally friendly substrates using safe formulations.

Which ones can't be set?

When entering a lighting store, you need to immediately understand which devices for installation in a steam room are not suitable at all. These are normal incandescent bulbs. They are quite fragile and are almost guaranteed to explode if hit by drops of water.

It makes no sense to choose gas-discharge products. Their high power is not justified in low light conditions.

Lattice decoration

Most of the baths located on personal plots, however, as well as saunas inside country houses, are finished with wood - most often clapboard made of various types of wood. In this case, I want to complement the interior with natural elements in order to maintain the integrity of the picture. Therefore, decorating lamps with wooden gratings has not only practical, but also aesthetic value.

From a practical point of view, the grille protects the space from splinters when the lamp is damaged. The appearance complements the peaceful and cozy atmosphere. The light that breaks through the individual cells loses annoying brightness and diffuses softly and everywhere, creating interesting shadows and reflections.

In the market of specialized products for the bath, you can find many beautiful and extraordinary grating options. But if you wish, you can do them yourself.

The most diverse wood can become a material for a decorative element. If you like a mono-interior, then the base can be made of the same type of wood as the sheathing of the rest of the bath surfaces. Most often, linden is chosen for these purposes.. Linden wood has a pleasant light shade, is very durable, exudes a pleasant smell and has healing properties.

But if you are a fan of aromatherapy, you should pay attention to coniferous products (larch or cedar). They are not suitable for walls and ceilings, since resins are released when heated, and a small grate will emit a specific aroma that has a beneficial effect on the nervous system. The product will serve you for many years.

The main elements of the lattice are the frame base and the lath mesh attached to it in several places, depending on the type.

When planning a design, you should pay attention to some features:

  • It is necessary to take into account the shape and type of the lighting device itself. It should be placed under the grate with a margin and conveniently fastened.
  • The place of installation significantly affects the design of the protection. If the lamp is located on the wall, then the shape of the lattice can be any: rectangular, semicircular, curly. If you install lighting in the corners, then the protection can be triangular or have another convenient number of edges.
  • The lengths of the rails are selected according to the parameters of the fixtures.

  • If the product has sharp corners, roughness and irregularities, they must be sanded and smoothed. These manipulations carry not only a decorative component, but also increase the safety of operation - they reduce the risk of injury or getting a splinter.
  • Fasteners must be hidden. In this case, metal products can also be used to fasten the elements. If the hardware heads are on the outer surface of the grate, there is a risk that vacationers will be able to burn themselves about them during the washing process.
  • The shape of the rails depends mainly on your preferences. Rectangular elements are used for simple and strict products. They can be arranged in parallel rows. Products with various bends are suitable for curly intricate lattices. But it will be harder for a novice master to work with them. Although as a result you will get a unique design element.

In order to embody the most daring decorative ideas, you can build a diffusing screen. It performs the same functions as the grille, but there are many more design possibilities.

Not only wood can serve as a material for the execution of a product. Bark, natural fabrics, ceramics, plastic, and glass varieties perfectly cope with protective functions. The most short-lived type of coating will be cardboard or paper.

Many bathhouse owners are currently inclined to believe that LEDs should be installed in the steam room. But this is too similar to the fashion when "everyone ran, and I ran." We believe that for a reasonable choice, you need to understand what you are dealing with and how it suits your goals and objectives. In our section “”, all its types are considered, so you can get a comprehensive idea.

Device and characteristics of LEDs

Before moving on to the practice of using them in the bath and sauna, let's find out what we are dealing with.

The LED is semiconductor element in which the passage of current causes the material to glow.

IMPORTANT! The main characteristic of current for semiconductors is current strength, not voltage. This means that fluctuations in this value are most significant for the operation of such elements.

Like any diode, it passes current in the forward direction and locks it in the opposite direction. Important Features LEDs are:

  • direct current, that is, the amount of current that provides passport luminosity;
  • maximum forward current - peaks that last for a very short time, which do not lead to a breakdown of the diode;
  • maximum reverse voltage– value, when applied, the LED will also not fail;
  • maximum power dissipation- the amount of heat that the body dissipates without collapsing.
  • volt-ampere characteristics- a graph of the relationship between voltage and current, helps with the selection of resistance.

These and other characteristics can be found in data sheet(technical description). It’s worth dealing with them if there is a desire not to burn the diodes, choosing the right characteristics for them step down transformer or power supply (driver). But if you do not assemble the device yourself, but use purchased lamps or ribbons, then there should be no problems.

However, you should also distinguish current and voltage sources- the first, when connecting the consumer, keep the current strength stable, varying the voltage drop, and the second keep a certain voltage, varying the current strength.

ATTENTION! LEDs need a source permanent current with stable characteristics, because even a 20% excess of the current will significantly reduce the life of the diodes.

Power supplies are available for sale. linear and impulse. Linear are suitable for the least powerful LEDs or strips of them. It is better to give preference to a pulse driver that has galvanic isolation.

ADVICE! It is better not to take cheap Chinese drivers. Their low cost will not pay for the rapid failure of the LEDs they feed. Indeed, for long-term operation, protection against fluctuations in the network, protection against overheating, protection against radio interference and output ripples are needed, namely, a cheap driver cannot provide all this.

Pros and cons of using in the bath and sauna

Still, LED lamps for saunas and baths are a slippery topic. On the one hand, you will find many ready-made offers specifically for these premises, on the other hand, no one hides the fact that it's too hot for semiconductors.

Indeed, the higher the temperature, the worse and less the semiconductor works. Pay attention to how the lamps are arranged - they must have radiator, which removes the heat generated by the diodes themselves. That is, they do not need external heating either - they themselves will overheat if there is no radiator.

But heat is effectively removed only when the ambient temperature is much lower than the critical temperature for crystal. And in the steam room, she simply cannot be like that. And it turns out that there is nowhere to remove the heat, and the LEDs die.

Nevertheless, a compromise is possible: even in the steam room temperature is not evenly distributed, and already somewhere under the shelves it reaches the limits allowed for the installation of LEDs. And in the floor area, the regime is even more favorable.

ATTENTION! Do not forget that this is a compromise. Therefore, it is not worth relying on the service life declared by the manufacturer. By the way, drivers often fail first.

In all other respects, of course, LED bath lights are good. If you put 9, 12, 24, 36 volts, there will be no more fatal electric shock in case of malfunctions. Of course, even at 220 volts, this can be avoided by installing an RCD, but supporters of low-voltage networks do not take this fact into account.

Of course, this is also just beautiful- Hidden, softly illuminating backlight instead of the usual lamps. Therefore, why think about some kind of RCD 🙂

energy saving it would be an important factor if the sauna was used daily, but for those who do not come to the site every week, this is not so important.

A nice bonus is environmental cleanliness, but the more important thing for a bather is that the same tape will not break into sharp fragments that can hurt you. Hence, LEDs are safer than incandescent bulbs.

minus we would only call that it is necessary to somehow stabilize the current, that is, to put stabilizer, qualitative transformer or driver, suitable for the parameters of the installed LED strips or lamps (the power margin of the driver should not be more than 20%, because otherwise the excess power returns to the network, and the driver breaks down faster). But if you understand the electrician, then this minus simply disappears.

Varieties

LED lamps for saunas and baths differ in the following parameters:

  • by voltage;
  • by color;
  • according to the configuration of the LEDs (lamps or strips).

With voltage everything is simple - either these are lamps that can be put in a standard cartridge and connected to a 220 volt network, or these are lamps for the already mentioned 9, 12, 24, 36 volts that need a transformer or driver, or these are tapes that need a driver , calculated on their power and other parameters.

By color: LEDs can give different colors depending on the substance used as a semiconductor, and also depending on the color of the lens. There are monochrome color ones, and there are RGB ones that change color (there are three types of color diodes). White light It is obtained by combining a blue LED element and a yellow phosphor. It's funny that if it were paints, it would turn out to be green 🙂 White color varies in temperature - from 2,700 to 10,000 kelvins.

And let's talk a little more about tapes and lamps.

Ribbon

Someone guessed to mount a lot of diodes in a row on a long and narrow circuit board. This created a new type of lighting today called led strip. Flexible tape is sold in reels, usually 5 meters long.

The main purpose - backlight interiors and exteriors. Since we are talking about LED strip for baths and saunas, here it is used to illuminate the shelves in the steam room and to illuminate pools.

Waterproofing tapes are divided into all the same degrees of dust and moisture protection, which apply to very different equipment. On sale you can find tapes protection class IP65 and IP68. In the first case, to protect the tape, it is poured on top with epoxy resin. In the second, a flexible and transparent PVC hose is put on the tape.

There are two modifications - when, for greater tightness, the inside of the "hose" is filled with silicone, and when it's just air. The most moisture-proof is the variation with PVC-filled silicone. It can be used to completely immerse the tape in water, for example, to illuminate the bottom of the pool. It is also suitable for a steam room.

To make it clear what the set of letters and numbers on the tapes means, let's decipher one of them.

SMD3528 120Led IP65 850Lm/msmd- this is a technology for creating a tape, on sale there are either created using SMD or DIP technologies. 3528 is the size of the crystal (here 3.5 by 2.8 mm). 120LED– number of diodes per meter (here 120). Next comes the class of protection against dust and moisture that you already recognize, and behind it - the luminosity in lumens per meter.

In addition to power, you can also connect to the tape controller, which will control blinking and/or color. The controller may come with remote.

IMPORTANT! The length of the tape matters. If it is more than five meters, then it is better to divide it into pieces that will be connected to the power source in parallel. It is also worth taking care of increasing the cross section of the wire for overly long tapes.

To select the correct power step-down transformer or power supply, you should calculate total power of installed LED strips and add a power margin of 20% to them (recall that a larger margin is harmful).

Lamps

Many have probably already installed such lamps at home, so they know that, according to the shape of the base, there are those that are screwed into standard cartridge E27 suitable for incandescent lamps and are powered by 220 volts, and there are other plinths, destined for spotlights and designed for mains voltage of 12, 24 or 36 volts.

It's a little easier with lamps than with tapes, because for those that work from 220 volt no calculations need to be made at all, and for lamps with low voltage it is enough to calculate the total power and select (not forgetting 20% in reserve) a suitable transformer.

On sale you can find lamps of different shapes and sizes, different power and luminosity, different warmth of white light, and most importantly - different manufacturers.

Of course, we will advise well-known manufacturers, but not because someone pays us for advertising, but for the simple reason that cheap LED lamps from unknown companies seldom meet the stated specifications, and their cheapness is due to the lack of important parts, including radiators for heat dissipation.

If you want to save money, order LEDs in China and assemble a lamp with the desired characteristics yourself. At least you will be sure of the filling.

  • The cold light in the bath will not be pleasant, so take warm yellow is up to 3000 kelvins.
  • To check how strong pulsating lamp light, use the camera of your smartphone. This can be done when checking in a store - just point the camera at a glowing lamp, and if flickering is noticeable on the screen, refuse to buy this model.
  • Color rendering index, probably not too important for lighting a steam room, but if you decide to put such lamps in the relaxation room, then focus on 80 CRI.
  • Another important characteristic is voltage range, handled by this model. It is better to take those with a wider range.

By the way, there is a hybrid of tape and lamp. Since we are talking about a circuit board, you are free to choose its configuration and the location of the LED elements on it. If such a board is placed inside a luminaire, in which instead of a base there is just a smooth base, and the top is covered with a ceiling, then we get LED lamp. Of course, you will need to select resistors (they take excess voltage if it is provided by the power source). The rest is the same as for lamps and ribbons.

Installation requirements for a sauna

There is an excellent video on the Web showing viewers the process of making a lamp from Chinese LEDs on their own. We think that craftsmen will find it useful:

Everything else concerns the direct installation of fixtures that use LED elements in the most problematic room for semiconductors - steam room.

The experts say that closer to the floor place the LEDs in the steam room, the better for them. But this inevitably means the need for the main lighting, which will be located higher and disperse the darkness 🙂

ADVICE! In the steam room, you should not mount lamps on the ceiling, because it is there that the temperature is highest, and in the Russian bath too, and not just in the sauna. Put the lamps on the wall or in the corners - this is the most correct location.

By the way, if you want to learn more about which lamps are more suitable, which ones, just follow the links. In addition, we have a good material dedicated entirely (with instructions for self-production). Another material will talk about and share tips on how to make them yourself.

If an LED strip is taken for regiment illumination and below them, then the class of its moisture protection (the last digit in the code) should be at least 7: IP*7 or IP*8. If an ordinary lamp is placed under the shelf, then its protection class must also be appropriate, because water will fall on it. (The store will tell you that they are all sealed, but the manufacturer usually specifies the protection class, and often this IP54).

IMPORTANT! If your lighting fixtures are powered from a low voltage network, then all power sources (transformers and drivers) must be outside the steam room!

Do not forget when installing how important heat removal for the normal operation of LED elements - it can be not only metal radiator with high thermal conductivity, but ventilation! It's true - some craftsmen create entire cooling systems for LEDs. But here is the time to think - maybe, after all, put an RCD and incandescent bulbs? 🙂

LED lighting in the sauna is unacceptable. You have probably heard such words on many thematic forums, and articles on this site also contain a similar statement. But it is not so.

LEDs can be used as lighting for a steam room or sauna, but subject to a number of restrictions. We will talk about them in our article. And at the same time we will discuss the specifics of the lighting network of the steam room as a whole.

First of all, let's see why it is impossible to use LEDs as such in a bath, and what are the limitations. At the same time, we note right away that LED lamps can be used almost without restrictions in washing rooms, recreation rooms, pools. Restrictions apply only to the couple.

The steam room is primarily temperature. In a good “dry” bath, the temperature can rise to 110⁰С, and some lovers of the steam business catch up with the temperature and a couple of tens of degrees higher.

For an ordinary LED lamp with operating temperature limits from minus 10 to plus 50-60⁰С, this is a clear overkill. If desired, you can look for LED lamps or tapes with a maximum operating temperature of up to 100⁰С. But you won't find it higher.

In addition, the steam room is humidity. It is not for nothing that this room, according to the norms of the PUE, is classified as especially wet. After all, especially in "wet" baths, the humidity level in the room can reach 100%. Not every lamp can withstand this.

At the same time, a simple LED lamp usually has an IP20 level, which tells us that it cannot even be brought close to such premises. Again, for the steam room, and for other rooms in the bath, you should look for lamps with a higher level of dust, but most importantly moisture protection.

Note! The abbreviation IP stands for the level of protection against dust and moisture. The first digit indicates the level of protection against dust, and the second against moisture. The higher the number, the higher the protection. For dust protection, there are numbers from 0 to 6. For moisture protection, numbers from 0 to 9 are used.

How to make lighting a steam room?

And now, let's figure out how to make LED bath lighting yourself - and so that it not only lasts a long time, but also pleases the eye. To do this, let's first analyze the requirements for the lighting of the steam room, and only then consider the various options for lighting schemes.

Steam room lighting requirements

Of course, let's start with the requirements. After all, based on them, we will make a choice of lighting options. And depending on the option used, we can see their technical advantages.

  • Let's start with the general lighting in the steam room. According to SNiP 05/23/2010, the minimum illumination in this room should be 75 lux. Is it a lot or a little? Let's count.
  • Let's say we have a steam room 3 × 3 - that is, an area of 9m2. For this room, we will need lamps with a luminous flux of at least 9 × 75 = 675lm. This roughly corresponds to the luminous flux of a 60W incandescent lamp, and if it is LED sauna lighting, a 10W lamp will suffice.

  • In addition to the luminous flux, special requirements are imposed on the luminaire itself. Since our steam room belongs to especially wet rooms, the lamp must have a protection class of at least IP

  • In addition, the lamp must be matte. This will eliminate its blinding effect, and help illuminate the steamed room.
  • Now, as for the wiring. According to the norms of the PUE, the lighting voltage in the steam room should be 12V. Therefore, you will need to install a 220/12V transformer. Moreover, it should be located in an adjacent dry room. The same rule applies to the switch, which is forbidden to be located inside the steam room.

It was not for nothing that the expression “wash before dark” was used in Russia, since in conditions of high humidity it was not possible to install torches or candles, and the windows themselves were always small so that as much heat as possible was not wasted. Currently, the market of lamps in general and lighting for baths in particular is oversaturated with various models, even the most demanding taste will find a product to their liking here.

Peculiarities

There are certain features of conducting lighting and electricity to the bath, a lot depends on the safety of the devices, as well as on other conditions - room temperature and air humidity. To summarize, we can conclude that in the dressing room these parameters are approximately identical to the parameters of the atmosphere that prevails in a bathroom in an ordinary apartment.

If the bath is designed in such a way that enough steam enters the room in front of the steam room itself for it to accumulate or condensate, then during the wiring it is necessary to somehow mark this place on the diagram.

The peculiarity is that only a model with a waterproof case is suitable for the effective operation of the lighting device.

The modern market has several universal wiring options for laying in rooms with high humidity, they have a specialized design. However, the price of such materials is quite high, which is not beneficial for those who build a small steam room for themselves and their families.

In this regard, there is an alternative solution to the problem based on the fact that the main point that you should pay attention to when wiring electricity, as mentioned earlier, is the temperature and humidity level in the room.

Previously, wiring in such conditions was laid in pre-prepared pipes, they were galvanized and completely covered with thermal insulation. You can use this method now, but the following conditions must also be met:

  • when laying pipes, it is necessary to make sure that they are above all containers and pipes with water;
  • there are hot elements in the room - stoves or other heating devices, it is necessary to lay electric lighting wires as far as possible from them;
  • if the wiring is ordinary in its properties, then before laying it through the pipe, it must be wrapped with a protective layer of fiberglass, the required thickness is about 2 mm.

We must not forget about the switches and sockets that we may need in the dressing room, it is better to install devices with a waterproof housing there.

But in no case should you mount contact and connecting devices in the steam room or in the room in front of it, they must be removed and installed outside - you can in the rest room or locker room.

Varieties

There is a wide range of lighting products on the market, but not every model is suitable for a bath, since not every lighting device can handle the difference in temperature and high humidity in the room.

There are several main types of bath lamps, among them are waterproof, heat-resistant, LED, moisture-resistant, low-voltage, wireless, and so on. Everything must be told in order:

Halogen lamps

The most resistant to high temperatures lamps - halogen. The power of such lamps ranges from 20 to 35 watts, the maximum heating for them will be 400 degrees. An important aspect is that the voltage used by the lamps is not dangerous for people, and their contacts are protected from moisture. In addition, halogen lamps have a pleasant appearance, it is possible to select shades of different colors.

LED lights

LED lamps are one of the most economical and environmentally friendly lighting options, however, it is better to place them as low as possible in the steam room, since they are rather difficult to tolerate heat and moisture. Such lamps are often used as a backlight, they can be placed behind the shelves, they can illuminate the room in various colors, since their spectrum is quite wide.

A room with LEDs will always be well lit, while such lamps do not consume a large amount of electricity.

Elongated tubular LEDs are usually placed on the ceiling, it must be borne in mind that there the concentration of steam and moisture will be maximum, such lamps must be resistant to the specified conditions.

When purchasing waterproof lamps for a bath, several aspects must be considered:

  1. On the box or frame of the lamp, you need to look at information about how high the degree of protection of this model from moisture is, for this there is a certain international classification; an IP value of 45 or higher will be acceptable.
  2. In addition to the fact that the lamps must be moisture-resistant, they must also be heat-resistant - in a steam room, the air temperature can range from 60 to 120 degrees and the lamp must be designed for such temperature fluctuations; well, for ceiling models, the standards are even higher, since they need to work at temperatures up to 300 degrees Celsius.

It is important that the fixtures are airtight, otherwise moisture or water can get inside the fixture and disrupt its operation. Good sealants are rubber and silicone.

fiber optic lamps

The best waterproof lamps can be called fiber optic lamps. When purchasing a fiber optic lighting device, you can be sure of its moisture resistance, even without paying attention to the protection factor. This is possible due to the specific properties of the material, it is able to pass through itself only light waves, but not electricity. Such lamps can also be used in water tanks and swimming pools.

Also, the advantage of these lamps will be a rather soft light, which will help create a cozy atmosphere and relax.

Just like LEDs, fiber optic lamps consume a fairly small amount of energy and have a long service life.

Models

When choosing different models of fixtures, you also need to start from where exactly it will be installed, temperature and humidity are also decisive factors that are based on when looking for a suitable option.

If the light needs to be carried out in the steam room, then, most importantly, do not install it in a potentially dangerous place - near the heating elements. A good option would be to place it on the ceiling or at the junction of walls.

Such placement is often underestimated, but in vain: the corner lamp will not only fit well into the interior, but will not interfere with people sitting in the steam room and touch their heads.

Models of horizontal fixtures at the junction of the ceiling and walls can also be called quite a suitable option. A decorative screen for a corner or horizontal type of fixtures can be purchased at a store or you can make it yourself, then you can additionally install an LED strip in the corner of the steam room, and fix it to the wall with a non-combustible material.

By itself, the LED strip will look very advantageous in the bath, besides, it is quite insensitive to high temperatures and does not require a lot of electricity to use.

If you want to be creative in decorating the rooms in the bath, then you can make some lighting elements with your own hands. However, it should be understood here that this is not about self-assembly of an electrical appliance, but rather about decorating an existing one by creating additional elements. The interior of the steam room is often dominated by wooden materials, so making a lattice or lampshade from wood will be a suitable stylistic solution.

Such wooden lampshades will not even have an aesthetic function, but rather protect wall lamps from damage and direct water ingress. In addition, with the help of a lattice, the lighting will be softer, diffused - it will become even more comfortable and pleasant to be in the room. You should not worry about the material for the manufacture of such decorative elements, it is quite possible to use the remains that were not thrown away after facing the walls or ceilings of the bath, this will also help maintain a single style concept.

However, if there is a desire to fill the steam room with aromas that promote relaxation and detachment from everyday problems, you can make an antique lampshade from larch or cedar, besides, these materials are also quite strong and durable.

In order to make a lampshade or grille on your own, you need to have elements for the frame and several small rails that will be fixed on top and bottom of the finished product. Of course, when making a lamp, there are certain points that you should pay attention to:

  • The size of the lamp itself will dictate the length of the rail for the lampshade, and there should not be any sharp corners, they must be sanded or rounded, this is necessary, in terms of safety, as well as to give a more aesthetic appearance to the product.
  • The shape and type of the lattice will differ depending on the size of the lamp itself, for example, if we need a frame for a wall lamp, then it should be made in the form of a semicircle or rectangle; the lattice for the corner lamp will be made in the form of a trapezoid.
  • It is best to fix such lamps on self-tapping screws, but, from the point of view of safety, they must be hidden inside so that they do not cause harm when heated.

When illuminating other rooms in the bath, you can use lamps with less stringent characteristics; traditionally, the dressing room is decorated with a chandelier, which is located in the middle of the ceiling or several lamps that are installed directly into the ceiling itself.

Modern models of chandeliers and lamps, stylized antique or the chosen concept, will look harmonious; such lamps can literally become a bright accent in the interior of the room.

materials

There are various lamps on the market that can be installed in a sauna or bath, and if a model has already been chosen, then you need to think about the material from which such a device will be made.

Increasing popularity of indoor lighting Himalayan salt. It is a material formed at the bottom of a dried-up lake about two hundred and fifty million years ago. Such salt is unique in that it contains more than 90 minerals, and when heated, it releases particles that have a beneficial effect on human health.

It is thanks to these properties of Himalayan salt that they began to use it in baths and saunas, and because of its high density, salt became a building material - bricks are made from it, used as a decorative element or as a steam generator.

Popular and Himalayan salt lamps, but often for baths it rather acts as an independent building element, the walls of such salt create the effect of the sea coast when the room is heated. Such vapors contribute to the prevention and treatment of bronchitis and even asthma, negative salt ions contribute to air disinfection.

Any products made from Himalayan salt emit ions, however, at certain temperatures - more than 60 degrees Celsius, the air will be more saturated with useful substances.

It is also necessary to comply with the conditions for the required humidity in the room - no more than 50%, since, otherwise, the salt will absorb water, and this will be ineffective.

It is for this reason that the use of Himalayan salt is more beneficial for a private bath, which is not designed for a large flow of visitors, in which the material cannot quickly become damp. Even in an ordinary Russian steam room, you need to thoroughly ventilate the room after each use, wait for the walls to dry so that the salt does not lose its properties.

In general, the shell from which the lamp is made is very important, as it has several main functions: protecting the light source from harmful effects, making the light softer by scattering it, which makes the steam room cozy. All these criteria are met by a lamp made of wood, it has undeniable advantages:

  • a wooden lamp will go well with the decor of the steam room, with walls and ceilings, as they are often also made of wood;
  • it is possible, by making such a lamp with your own hands, to endow it with an interesting shape, to perform with a beautiful ornament;
  • quite pleasant to the touch.

A ceramic lamp can also be installed in the recreation area, that is, its base will be made of this temperature-resistant material.

You can use glass to decorate bath lighting, but you should not place such lamps in the steam room itself - this is unsafe.

Accommodation options

As mentioned earlier, there are a fairly large number of different fixtures suitable for installation in baths and saunas. But each room has its own differences, respectively, and the lighting for them is selected according to the appropriate parameters:

in the steam room

In order to install the lamp in the steam room, you must first carefully approach its choice. The thing is that this, one might say, is the main room in the bath, it is saturated with steam, moisture and hot air. All these factors affect the selection of a lamp, not every model meets such characteristics. In addition, too bright and contrasting lighting also does not speak in favor of certain types of lamps; for the holy of holies, a bath needs soft light to help you relax.

Since the steam room has its own special microclimate, you can install a lamp in it only on the very top of the wall or at the joints - in the corners. This is due to the fact that the ceiling and walls are one of the coolest surfaces in the steam room, moreover, this location can be called convenient, the light streams from behind and does not strain the eyes of those who are relaxing in the bath. You can install fiber-optic lamps, then the lighting will definitely be soft and diffused, this will help you relax.

An important point is that such lamps have a high level of protection and are quite safe in rooms with high temperatures.

You can also choose LED lamps, they are heat-resistant, have several lighting modes and rich colors, you can easily save energy with them, and besides, LEDs have a long service life. But in any case, the lamps must be covered with a protective frame or a heat-resistant shade; also, to create an entourage and additional protection, you can cover the light with a beautifully designed wooden grate.

Inside the bath, if the lamps are mounted on the ceiling, they must withstand a temperature of 250 degrees, but if on the wall, then less - at least 100 degrees Celsius.

Such lamps are made of heat-resistant material, ceramic or porcelain, the body is additionally strengthened, making it airtight.

In the washing

Unlike the steam room, in the washing room, on the contrary, it is necessary to hold a bright and powerful light, since this room is not intended for relaxation, it is necessary in order to wash after the steam room. It is for this purpose that the light in the sink is set to be contrasting and sharp, but it still should not hit the face of a person in the room.

But here you also need to be careful, this room has a source of moisture, you need to protect the lamps and wires from accidental contact with water. The switch should be located outside the washing room, in order to prevent water from entering there, for the same purpose, all lamps will have protective waterproof frames or shades.

In the dressing room

In the dressing room, lighting can be made practically anything, since the room does not have any special temperature drops and moisture concentrations. The classic option would be a chandelier in the center of the room or several lamps that are mounted on the ceiling. The light from such lamps is bright, but does not hurt the eyes and generally creates a fairly comfortable atmosphere in the room.

It is also possible to style the dressing room in a certain manner, then the lamps can be placed on the wall and made according to the general concept of the interior.

In the rest room

In the rest room, as well as in the dressing room, there is a certain humidity coefficient, so when installing lamps there, you need to be sure that they will have a protection class of at least 1. Lamps for such rooms are quite ordinary, from 75 to 100 watts , you can also install ordinary ceiling lamps or sconces.

For a sauna, in general, the same temperature difference is typical for lighting, it is worth paying attention to the classification of the international level of protection, make sure that the lamps are heat-resistant, heat-resistant and sealed.

Which lamp to choose and how to install?

Experts agree that in order to make lighting in the bath, you should not choose fluorescent lamps, as they are not resistant to high temperatures and humidity.

It is better to choose halogen or LED lamps, a fiber optic lamp is also suitable, but all this must be secured with a protective cover. In the dressing room, you can use two lamps at once with parallel inclusions of the light source to add brightness to the room lighting.
