These lines were just asking for a prologue to a post about my learning at distance courses of Russian as a foreign language at Moscow State University. Only instead of children it is necessary to substitute “kind people”, and instead of crocodiles, sharks and gorillas - furious books on teaching methods.

What is it about:

Moscow State University offers distance learning courses in Russian as a foreign language. It is stated on the site that at the end of the course, you will become just a god, an almighty cool teacher of the Russian language for foreigners, and there will be no difficulties and unknown moments for you in this field of knowledge.

You are given access to the electronic library of Moscow State University, where you can download all the materials that are recommended for the successful completion of the work.

Also, at any time you can contact your coordinator, ask him questions of interest and get an answer.

What do you end up getting:

You get questions like “What is reading as a type of speech activity? What types of reading do you know? What is the purpose of teaching reading? (also about writing, listening and speaking), “What determines the selection and sequence of the arrangement of grammatical material?”, “Describe the features of monologue and dialogic speech” and other similar nonsense.

And where does the Russian language, you ask. All the months of training, the same question did not leave me!

To answer these and other no less interesting, and most importantly, useful questions in the teaching of the RUSSIAN LANGUAGE, you, as I have already said, can download at least the entire library. Just keep in mind that the books there are such that only highbrow Methodists like the ones who wrote them can wade through them and read them.

My claims:

This course did not meet my expectations at all. I specifically set aside three summer months for myself and signed up for this course (at Moscow State University, I note, not somewhere in a sharashka office, but at Moscow State University!) so that they would tell me about the RUSSIAN LANGUAGE, about its system, about how it functions.

Needless to say, I only learned about the language itself that animate and inanimate words decline differently!

I respected!

I gave 22 thousand. What did I get? – Access to a library of books that I will never read or use. And also a crust, which states that now I am a real teacher of Russian as a foreign language. Just as clumsy as these pencils

And I completely forgot to brag. In December, I took part (albeit in absentia) in the conference "Russian Heritage in the Modern World", which was held in London. Program description

The development of the educational program of professional retraining involves the passage of pedagogical practice.

Pedagogical practice in the amount of 22 ac. hours must be completed remotely by studying and analyzing the practical experience accumulated by the teaching staff of the Institute, using video recordings of lessons on programs for studying Russian as a foreign language, collected in electronic library Institute.

Final exam and defense of the final attestation work

The final exam and the defense of the final attestation work on the educational program of professional retraining is carried out at a meeting of the final attestation commission using distance learning technologies, or, at the request of the student, with his personal presence directly at the Institute.

Before moving to another country, I received an additional specialty “Teacher of Russian as a Foreign Language”. After analyzing the market, I found that for me this could be a good opportunity to work not remotely, but in the host country (and here I am talking about). Of course, the most ideal option is to teach not Russian, but English - this is in great demand in almost any country in the world. But if you, like me, feel that you need a lot of time and effort for this, pay attention to Russian as a foreign language. Now I will tell my experience.

More than anything, I do not like to sit in boring lectures and study for a long time what can be learned quickly. Therefore, when I decided to study, the main criteria for choosing a place of study were:
- enough short term learning,
- a certificate of study in English, which will be quoted abroad.

First of all, I looked at what they offer in Minsk, the city where I planned to stay for another 3-4 months. But right now, training has not started anywhere, and its duration everywhere was at least 6 months.

I started looking in Moscow and found the perfect option for me. Completely distance learning with the issuance of a decent type of certificate of the Moscow State University- the one that foreigners at least know. I studied at the Russian Language Center of Moscow State University (abbreviated TsRYA MSU) - I chose this option based on appearance and text in the certificate, terms of training and cost. By the way, due to the fact that the Russian ruble fell against the dollar and the euro, in terms of these currencies, the cost of education, in my opinion, is extremely pleasant (500 dollars instead of 1000 before the collapse of the ruble).

The second option from Moscow State University is to study at the Center for International Education of Moscow State University (abbreviated as CMO MSU) - if you pay about twice as much, then there is also the opportunity to do an internship and get not a certificate, but a diploma, but I decided that the certificate would be enough for me . Moreover, I have a diploma in a very similar specialty.

Is there some more International Center Russian as a foreign language, they also indicate their link to Moscow State University in the address. But there are really no reviews about them, and in general, quick promises and a slightly crumpled approach in my opinion are embarrassing.

About the course: assignments and deadlines

The course that I took is declared as a three-month course, but it can be completed a little faster. The main task is to do two tests with a practical task at the end of each. According to my subjective assessment, the first is more difficult than the second. The tasks of the control are compiled very competently - a list of books is given for each question, indicating specific pages where you can find the answer. A broader list of references, also with page numbers, is given at the beginning of each section. In fact, if the goal is just a diploma, tests can be done fairly quickly. I also wanted to gain knowledge, so I tried to read all the proposed sources and wrote a short summary - each control took me a month.

My fears

When I signed up for the course, I was worried that the concept of distance is different for everyone and that you will need to attend webinars at a certain time. Fortunately, my fears were not justified. The webinars were indeed held, but they could be perfectly viewed in the recording. All questions could be asked to the teacher either by mail at any time, or via Skype, as a rule, twice a week at the agreed consultation time. I have never used it, because due to the thoughtful structure of the course and control works(I really liked how it was all presented and how much easier it was to do the assignments thanks to the competent structure), there were no unsolvable questions. However, it is very nice when the teacher is in touch and you know that you can ask any question.

All books needed for work and additional ones can be downloaded from the special library of Moscow State University, the right of access to which is given immediately after the start of the course and forever. There is also an option to order a set of paper books, but I regretted the place in the apartment and $ 100, and as it turned out later - I did the right thing - everything is in the library.

In the electronic library of Moscow State University, there are really a lot of textbooks on teaching Russian language to both adults and children, and a variety of manuals for teachers.

And the result!

Most recently, I received a Certificate (by the way, they are sent by EMS mail), and now in a month or two I plan to try to teach. Let's see what happens!


UPD: In the comments and in the mail, I get quite a lot of the same type of questions. I decided to highlight the three most frequent and answer them in the article itself.

1. — I have a diploma in non-humanitarian discipline, will these courses suit me?

My answer: if everything was in order with the language, you write correctly and know the basic terminology - why not? But different course organizers treat this differently, so it’s worth clarifying about some specific courses directly there.

2. I already teach English language Should I expand my business?

My answer: in my opinion, English teachers have so many opportunities and options for development that it would be better to use them. As a rule, the salary of an English teacher is still higher. In general, it is important to understand why you want to get this new specialty and how you will use it. If it's "just in case" or "to make more money" - think about the expediency again.

3. How great are the chances of finding a job, how much is this profession in demand?

It seems to me that the most the main problem all these courses for a new specialty is that they don’t teach you to look for clients at all. And of course, formally, this is not their concern, but how many times have I heard stories about how a person full of hope spends money on education, happily receives a diploma and then finds out that they don’t take him anywhere. This applies to so many “free” professions: tutor, guide, massage therapist, etc.

My opinion is that exactly as much energy as you spend on mastering a new profession should be spent on self-promotion. IN modern world without it, nowhere, and even if you are a brilliant teacher, if no one knows about you, then you will be out of work. Therefore, learn to promote yourself, and then such questions will not arise.
